Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum), commonly referred to as Lingzhi in China, is a fungus which has been widely used through the centuries for the general promotion of health and longevity in Asiancountries.TheLatinwordlucidusmeans“shiny”or“brilliant”andreferstothevarnished appearance of the surface of the mushroom. In China, G. lucidum is called lingzhi, whereas in Japan the name for the Ganodermataceae family is reishi ormannentake. The anti-cancer effects of G.lucidum have been demonstrated in both invitro and invivo studies.Inaddition, the observed anti-cancer activities of Ganoderma have prompted its usage by cancer patients alongside chemotherapy. It has been known to have numerous pharmacological effects including immuno- modulating, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidative and radical-scavenging, and anti-aging effects. The main two bioactive components of G. lucidum can be broadly grouped into triterpenes and polysaccharides. Despite triterpenes and polysaccharides being widely known as the major active ingredients, the different biological pathways by which they exert their anti-cancer effect remain poorly defined.Several types of Ganoderma products are available on the market including ground fruiting bodies or mycelium processed into capsule or tablet form; extracts from fruiting body or mycelium dried and processed into capsule or tablet form, Ganodermabeer and Ganoderma hair tonics (Jong and Birmingham, 1992).Most mushrooms are 90% water by weight. For G. lucidum, the remaining 10% consists of 26–28% carbohydrate,3–5%crudefat,59%crudefibre,and7–8%crudeprotein.Inaddition,G.lucidum contains a wide variety of bioactive constituents such as terpenoids, steroids, phenols, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides. In this review, we focused on the various health benefit of G. lucidum, in particular, the two main active ingredients: triterpenes and polysaccharides

    Conservative management of placenta percreta

The incidence of placenta accreta, increta, percreta, collectively called placenta accrete spectrum disorders, has been rising dramatically over the last decade worldwide, mainly due to rising cesarean delivery rate. Antenatal diagnosis and making no attempt to remove any parts of placenta is associated with reduced levels of hemorrhage and therefore less blood transfusion. Although elective cesarean hysterectomy is the standard practice, the choice of conservative management has emerged into practice. Conservation of the uterus reduces numerous short- and long-term complications including massive blood transfusion, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, high morbidity and mortality rates, adjacent pelvic organ damage, infection as well as long term psychological sequelae, due to loss of femininity and fertility. Hereby representing a model for the follow up of conservative management of placenta percreta. Sequential changes in symphysial fundal height, serum beta-HCG and ultrasonographic volume of the placenta mass were used as combined methods for the follow up of the case. The placental volume was calculated by using a 2-dimensional ultrasound scan by measuring the maximum length and anteroposterior and transverse diameters of the uterus and using the formula for the volume of prolate ellipsoid.

Secondary postpartum hemorrhage on day 58 of cesarean section due to uterine scar rupture

Secondary postpartum hemorrhage is rare and affect 0.23-3% of all pregnancies. It happens between 24 hours to 12 weeks of post-delivery. These postpartum hemorrhages occur more often during normal vaginal delivery only a small subset of postpartum hemorrhages occurs after cesarean section. Delayed postpartum hemorrhage is obstetrics emergencies that occurs following vaginal or cesarean delivery, in later condition may be caused by dehiscence of uterus incision after cesarean section which can lead to severe and fatal bleeding. We herein report a case of secondary postpartum hemorrhage after cesarean section

    Get PDF
Background: This study was conducted to analyse the antenatal complications, perinatal outcome and to be advocate routine screening for thyroid disorders in pregnancy. This study was prospective and observational study with 50 cases which was newly diagnosed when suspected as pregnancy with thyroid disorders. The commonest thyroid disorder found in pregnancy is hypothyroidism and it adversely affects the maternal and fetal health in the form of infertility, early pregnancy loss, PIH, anaemia, IUGR, PROM, preterm labor, neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. If thyroid disorders are appropriately detected and treated either before or in early pregnancy, the adverse maternal and fetal outcome can be prevented. Methods: The present study was conducted in a tertiary care centre Mumbai from June 2015 to October 2016. All pregnant females who are newly diagnosed as hypothyroid, attending the ANC clinic were enrolled in the study. Results: In the present study, most common obstetric complication observed was preeclampsia and most common fetal complication was preterm delivery. Conclusions: In view of the high prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions in Indian pregnant woman and its association with different adverse pregnancy related complications we recommend routine screening for thyroid dysfunctions in pregnancy

Background: Causes of maternal mortality are haemorrhages, infections, unsafe abortions, and obstructed labour. 25% of these are caused by haemorrhages and are preventable, one of the measures is active management of third stage of labour (AMTSL). For prevention, treatment of postpartum haemorrhage oxytocics are available oxytocin, methylergometrine, misoprostol, prostaglandin F2α.Methods: Study was conducted, 160 patients were randomly given one of following oxytocics a) tablet misoprostol 600 µg per rectal b) Inj. Oxytocin 10 IU IM c) Inj. Methylergometrine 0.2 mg IM d) Inj. PGF2α. Duration for the delivery of placenta and amount of blood loss was measured, side effects were noted, and comparison of haemoglobin and blood loss done. Results: No significant difference in mean blood loss in all group with respect to parity and type of labour. In present study it seems that no oxytocic is superior to other in reducing the blood loss. Misoprostol has variable onset of action. Mean duration of 3rd stage in various groups is same. In respect to side effects HTN is common with methylergometrine, shivering and fever with misoprostol and diarrhoea with PGF2α.Conclusions: Study concluded that all uterotonics have some advantages, oxytocin is ultimate drug of choice in skilled hand due to its definite onset of action while Tab misoprostol in unskilled hands, other oxytocin are reserved for complementary usage and treatment of PPH but Misoprostol has variable onset of action
